Thanks for your quick reply and the hint! I didn't even think of that m(

I just retried on a pure buster box, and it worked fine. Seeing that
there is no nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver package in stretch/bpo, am I
right to assume that the combination of a bpo-kernel with 340xx-legacy
currently just won't work?
