I have tested the patch on my desktop and it worked fine. More
importantly, it's exactly the same fix applied by Nvidia to 396.18. Are
you sure the nvidia kernel module is causing the freeze?
Note that there is quite a lot of work to do before 396+ can be
uploaded, as i386 and armhf are being dropped so changes have to be
made to distribute the 32bit libraries, so it won't happen anytime
soon. But the kernel module patch should work.
