I tried with the experimental drivers and I also realized (with buster and experimental versions) the issue is not just connection through thunderbolt, but a direct connection with an hdmi cable to my laptop has the same results. What's interesting is that this was not an issue with PopOS's default configurations. Another thing to note is that the Thinkpad X1E's video outputs are directly connected (mainlined) to the NVIDIA 1050TI-Q.
