I suspect that nvidia-modprobe.conf somehow got deleted. Check
   debsums -ac nvidia-kernel-support
And if the file does not exist, no alternative is created for it.

Are there any other /etc/nvidia/current/nvidia-modprobe.conf* files 
sitting around?

(As it is a conffile, all user modifications to it are preserved, 
including deletion.)
