Hello,
I would like to add further information to bug #1128843, concerning
repeated NVIDIA DRM warnings on Debian 13.
System configuration
- Operating system: Debian 13 (Trixie)
- Kernel: 6.12.113+deb13-amd64
- NVIDIA driver: 550.163.01-4~bpo13+1
- Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER
- Motherboard: MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX
- Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6, Wayland
- Display manager: SDDM
Description of the incident
On October 29, 2026, I experienced a complete desktop freeze while
browsing the internet. The problem occurred approximately two hours
after I had installed and completed a system update. I had to force a
shutdown because the system was no longer responding.
During the incident, system monitoring showed the following:
- plasmashell was using approximately 28.1 GiB of resident memory.
- Total RAM usage was approximately 30.9 GiB out of 31.3 GiB.
- The 32 GiB swap partition was completely full.
- CPU usage was high across multiple cores.
Relevant log messages
The previous boot journal contains repeated kernel warnings:
WARNING: CPU ... at
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia-current/550.163.01/build/nvidia-drm/nvidia-drm-drv.c:1226
nv_drm_revoke_modeset_permission+0x327/0x340 [nvidia_drm]
These warnings appeared repeatedly during startup and later in the session.
Shortly before the freeze, the journal recorded:
systemd-journald: Under memory pressure, flushing caches.
This message appeared several times. The logs also contain repeated
messages from kwin_wayland_wrapper stating that key-repeat events were
discarded because the Wayland compositor was not processing events fast
enough.
There were also PipeWire buffer-related messages around the same time.
I could not find any explicit out-of-memory or OOM-killer messages in
the journal.
After reboot
After restarting the system, memory usage returned to normal. The
plasmashell process was no longer consuming an unusually large amount of
memory.
I cannot establish whether the NVIDIA DRM warnings caused the memory
consumption or whether these are separate problems. However, the
repeated warnings, extreme memory usage and desktop freeze occurred on
the same system.
Could you advise whether these observations are relevant to this bug and
whether further diagnostic information would be useful?
Please note that English is not my native language, and my English
skills are limited. I used an AI assistant to help me translate and
formulate this report in English. The technical information and
observations are based on my own system and its log files.
Kind regards
Lucas
