I am not entirely sure either way. Contrary to my previous post,
reasons why it might be a simple bug in the GNU TLS libraries:

* As far as I can tell the TLS libraries use versioned symbols which
  should solve the problem with conflicts.

* I moved the /usr/lib/sasl directory out of the way and ran the
  problem ldapsearch again, and I can not see any evidence it is using
  openssl, but it still crashes.
