If I use
database meta
I still get the same symbol error

With the exact same config file accept using
database ldap
no error.

Using ldap insteat of meta and running a query properly proxies it to
the Active Directory server and seems to successfully bind.  The bind
request returns a success anyway.

But the results of the request is an error.
