I'd like to make sure a backport is available for our friends on etch as
well.  Perhaps the config package could implement the configuration
modification differently while still presenting the same interface to
the user?  Is it even feasible to break a stable package up and generate
another .deb from the source?

I don't have a lot of experience in this area.  Could someone give me
some pointers to documentation?  I figure I'll take a look at how exim4
does it, since it is the only package which comes to mind that provides
such an interface.
