In that case it sounds like a failure to look up symbols in the other
backend module. This may be due to a problem with how the backends are
being opened with dlopen(), but I don't know. I would recommend that you
file a bug report against the slapd package.

What would be most helpful is a reproducible test case complete with a basic
slapd.conf; I know plenty about symbol lookups but I know nothing about the
meta backend.
