That's mostly because there are really no primary OpenLDAP package
maintainers (Steve will forgive me if he doesn't agree with this, but I'm
pretty sure he would), only people like Steve and I who care enough to be
secondary maintainers but only rarely have the time to do serious work and
other people who don't have any free time.

The package really needs more maintainers, and all other problems
essentially fall from there.

As long as you only need to add new things, not change anything that's
there, a more general solution along the same lines should work, I think.
