It looks like I have to investigate this more thoroughly. In the
slapd.conf I see, it is there, but commented out.

This would imho be a similar move than removing it, for the reasons
outlined below.

I only wanted a clearer indication in slapd.conf that this option is no
longer supported and can't be used, regardless of its setting. This is
imho not obvious in slapd.conf, although it didn't actually impact me
in so far as I had "schemacheck = on" anyway. If you say you just
comment it out (presumably in postinst), then people who relied on
"schemacheck = off" will be bitten.
