I, too, was seeing this message on an AMD64 system running Squeeze, but a
bit of searching lead me to [1], which implied that I should run slapcat
as the 'openldap' user. This fixes the warning message for my system.
% slapcat > /dev/null
bdb_db_open: database "dc=we-be-smart,dc=org": unclean shutdown detected; attempting recovery.
bdb_db_open: database "dc=we-be-smart,dc=org": recovery skipped in read-only mode. Run manual recovery if errors are encountered.
% su openldap -c slapcat > /dev/null
