Actually, on further investigation, that doesn't appear to fully solve the
problem. openldap has /bin/false as its shell, so that is why no output
was being seen.
su -s /bin/sh openldap -c '/usr/sbin/slapcat -l /dev/null'
bdb_db_open: database "dc=we-be-smart,dc=org": unclean shutdown detected; attempting recovery.
bdb_db_open: database "dc=we-be-smart,dc=org": recovery skipped in read-only mode. Run manual recovery if errors are encountered.
If slapd is shutdown before running slapcat, the warning is not generated.
