You really should report bugs like this upstream (to the OpenLDAP ITS) 
otherwise we're not likely to see them or fix them. In this case, there's 
already code in MDB to work with BSD-derivatives (e.g. MacOSX) that don't 
support process-shared mutexes; we just need to add some detection for the BSD 
flavor you're running.

You should also report issues like this to the BSD projects and tell them to 
fix their pthread support.
