Hi Steve,
I just wanted you to be aware that development is starting on the OpenLDAP
2.5 release. The major change over 2.4 that is probably most necessary to
be aware of is that this is the last release series in which
back-bdb/back-hdb will be available for use. The replacement backend for
back-bdb/back-hdb is back-mdb.
Back-mdb is based on the LMDB DB software: <http://symas.com/mdb/>
Overall, it is much simpler to configure and deploy than back-bdb/back-hdb,
and a substantial improvement performance wise:
<http://mishikal.wordpress.com/2013/05/16/openldap-a-comparison-of-back-mdb-and-back-hdb-performance/>
<http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/OpenLDAP_MDB_vs_HDB_performance>
Overall, my suggestion for Debian in the 2.5 series would be to not support
back-bdb/back-hdb at all, and migrate user's data over to back-mdb on
upgrade.
If you have any questions on this, feel free to let me know.
Regards,
Quanah
