I'm glad to hear switching to mdb fixed your problems.

Since the bug with the other backend was not actually fixed but still
affects wheezy (and possibly later releases too), probably this report
should be kept open to track it. Unfortunately we still don't know how
to reproduce it, or even whether it's a BDB bug or an openldap bug, so
any progress looks unlikely.

I'm not a developer, but I would like to see that happen and will work
towards it. #685748 is probably a good place to discuss that.
