I did a brief test (just creating a group and adding/removing a few 
members) using the config you supplied, and reproduced the crash in 
stable but not with 2.4.40 from testing. I haven't looked into this in 
detail and don't know how to trigger the other cases Jan mentioned, but 
it does appear to work, at least for basic cases with no other overlays 
involved.

If you have a development or staging environment set up, is it possible 
for you to test the newer slapd there and see if it resolves your 
problem?
