I searched around a bit but couldn't find an upstream submission of this 
patch, and current back-shell still lacks this feature.

The patch you provided (thanks for that!) needs some updating to apply 
to the current code. However it looks like it should be easy to fix up, 
and I'd be happy to work on that if it helps someone. Do you still use 
this feature anywhere?
