Sven and I had some private discussion about this ticket, and he was 
able to confirm for me that the patches for ITS#8432 and ITS#8648 
resolved all of the problems he reported here.

We already have #860947 tracking the sasl_client_init issue, so I'm 
re-scoping this one to focus just on the 3-way delta-MMR issue 
(ITS#8432). Also bumping the severity on #860947 since it turns out to 
cause even more symptoms than I had previously realized (memory 
corruption, so not all that surprising). Note that I consider the 
discussion with Sven as confirming that #860947 was in fact a symptom of 
the sasl_client_init bug.
