I'd prefer backports to avoid any external repositories.

I provision the servers with DebOps [1], so I want to stay as close to 
vanilla Debian as possible to not break things.

For sure I am in contact with the main dev at DebOps to check for how to 
proceed.

I might try the suggested packages in a VM, yes. Test the upgrade 
process with my actual directory content.
