I can not reproduce your problem.

I get the following error instead:
fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms

I've never set up postfix to use any of this, so I have no idea
if this is some kind of configuration error or not.  Is this some
error from libsasl?

I can get simular error message like this:

But the problem here is that /etc/postfix/mail.pem does
not exist at all.
