Yes, the documentation is full of such pod errors.  And I don't
have the time to go and fix them all.

That source .pod file hasn't changed in almost 10 years, but
perl interpretes it differently now thinking that "=item 1"
means it's going to use numbers to format the items, and
expects the numbers to actually go up.  I don't think this
is an error of perl.

There are various other issues in other manpages, all mentioned
by pod errors.
