this move to the builtin functions should be only temporary until a fix 
for openssl is available from upstream. So I wanted to change as less 
things as possible that need to be reverted later.

These packages don't use autotools but scons, so there should be no 
problem with detection errors or linking.

Do you see any other problems except that the buildds need to fetch a bit 
more stuff?
