I am not really sure if cdparanoia will ever be able to read from a
regular file, as its purpose is specifically to "fight" the problems of
reading from an audio CD.

I think that Monty may not wish to deal with these cases. I will forward
him this bug and see what are the outcomes, but I am not optimistic
here.

In the mean time, you may want to use something like cuetools to get one
huge audio file extracted from a CD and split it in files corresponding
to tracks.

I will downgrade the severity of this bug to wishlist.
