Thanks. The --driver=sg workaround was written to address a
similar problem with another parallel SCSI adapter, so
there is evidence that it is a general problem between
the Linux cdrom driver and parallel SCSI transports.

I fully agree, but haven't found a straight-forward way to
detect the transport type yet. Guess I'll need to read some
kernel sources :-(
In the mean time, you could just hardcode the --driver=sg
argument into your script as the sg driver is supposed
to work with the ATA varieties also.
