Maybe didn’t you checkout (or use) the pristine-tar branch?
Anyway, thinking of it now, rmdir may be better than rm -r to remove
this empty directory: it’ll FTBFS if something else gets added in that
directory, instead of the all content removed. That will force further
investigation if one overlooks such change in a future version.
