Hi,

As you might already know, ownCloud 6 alpha 1 is about to be released
really soon, followed a month later by the first ownCloud 6 release.

I intend to work on it ASAP, and hopefully start pushing it into
experimental before the end of the month (I don’t know yet how much work
that will represent, so no promises, but that’s my target).

Upstream do only support upgrade from one major version to the next one
(the owncloud_5 Debian package carries a patch to help upgrading from
owncloud_4 — that once were in testing before Wheezy get published –
without upgrading via 4.5 as expected upstream).
Since ownCloud 4 has been removed from Debian 4 months ago (because it
wasn’t supported upstream anymore), I believe it is not worth trying to
carry a proper upgrade path from the owncloud_4 Debian package anymore,
does that sound acceptable? If not, someone will have to step up to at
least test such upgrade path from owncloud_4 to owncloud_6 (I cannot
honestly pretend I’ll be able to take care of that myself on top of
packaging owncloud_6, its eventual new dependencies, and making sure a
proper upgrade path from owncloud_5 is in place).

Once the owncloud_6 package will be stable enough to be used (and ready
to meet the expectations to migrate from unstable to testing), I’d like
to push it into Sid ASAP (anyway, Jessie will not be released with
owncloud_5), does that sound acceptable? Of course, I intend to
communicate on this list before doing so, so feel free to point any
blocker to this plan in the mean time.
