It's true for a lot of packages in Debian that if you mix Debian
packages with packages from upstream, things don't work smoothly.
Unfortunately that's not something we can fix (in general).

What we as Debian (have to) care about is that the packages within one
release are working correctly together.

Sorry that that doesn't support your use-case, but that's how it is.
