In any event, the auto-detection is clearly still broken; I'm not sure what to infer from the fact that recreating 1 doesn't work.

This is what I meant; the enclosed folder has messages 1-6, and a-d is fine.  If any of 2-5 are deleted, a-d is still fine, but if 1 is deleted then mbox is reported.

Yes, bypassing a-d works fine.
