According to the BTS and the build logs the problems start with
version 3.303-1; 3.251-1 in squeeze still built fine:

In general I'm all for starting to remove fringe packages from testing
(thanks for your initiative!) but unless I'm mistaken in this case it
doesn't seem to be necessary.
