I was going to reply to this by saying that the package won't be of
use to anyone if it can't be rebuilt; but in fact this problem only
appears (out of i386 and amd64) on i386, so you're right that it 
probably is a bit premature to be removing the package.

As for orphaning, I'm not sure about this. I'd have thought that
orphaning the package from the Debian perl group is probably going to
make it even less likely that the package will get fixed in Debian.
