Hi,

Thanks for your work on this so far! This is going to be an issue for
Debian soon too, since the Debian apache maintainers are planning to
have Apache 2.4 for wheezy (the next release, due to be frozen in June).
The Debian bug tracking this in relation to mod_perl is [1] (CCed).

Your option 2 seems fine from my point of view.
