The diagnostics improved in 5.15.6 with
 http://perl5.git.perl.org/perl.git/commit/799fd3b94fb5c431b24ee141e32a0b09d56f303c

I've forwarded this bug report upstream as [rt.cpan.org #104379].
We could probably patch out the pure perl DESTROY method for the
time being, as it apparently doesn't currently get called at all.
