  That's what it turned out to be, two different issues with the chroot itself.  
First was that the "httpdredir" in its sources.list kept on getting pointed to 
a repo that always failed. And then, the LV turned out to still be too small 
and kept running out of space during sbuild-updates.  I was then able to 
successfully run adt-run on local copies of the two new packages.
