Greetings.
I can reproduce the random nature of this bug on START1-S instances
from Scaleway (amd64). The failure rate is around 25% here.
I've put a bunch of build logs here:
https://people.debian.org/~sanvila/build-logs/libimage-sane-perl/
(Note: Those logs use eatmydata, but I've also checked that it fails
in a normal way, i.e. without eatmydata).
If you need a test machine to reproduce the randomness, please contact me
privately and I will gladly provide ssh access.
I'm retitling the bug because it is not really architecture specific.
My theory is that it's a race condition which happens easily on
machines with 2 CPUs (and maybe also slower than average).
Note: I know START1-S instances are discontinued but in either case
the bug is in the package, not in the instances. I will try to check
on the new DEV1-S instances (those also have 2 CPUs and 2 GB of RAM).
Thanks.
