Andreas Bombe has experienced a similar problem and found this to be
the cause: 

| I actually found the problem.  I was running the fglrx driver without
| the ATI proprietary libGL.  This does not work for all apps and after
| installing fglrx-glx, the problem disappeared.

Can this be related your crash, too?
