Should work now. My failure was to using git for cloning the
repository, now I have retried it using 

1. gbp clone --pristine-tar
ssh://git.debian.org/git/pkg-phototools/checkit-tiff.git
2. cd checkit-tiff
3. gbp import-orig --pristine-tar --uscan
4. gbp import-orig --pristine-tar /tmp/checkit-tiff_0.1.1.orig.tar.gz

Hope it works now
