Have revisited darktable since last upgrades and it seems the issue is gone. 
Anyway, for the record, having several USB devices plugged in (as I often 
have) has no noticeable effect in my case. Whenever the issue happened a 
reboot should do the trick to have darktable working again. And it seemed 
suspending to RAM forth and back was a major source of trouble on this matter.
