Package: hugin
Version: 2018.0.0+dfsg-3+b1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
This is quite a lengthy story, sorry about it, just bring some time with you.
Problems with Hugin started about two years ago with the Stretch-release, I
also did report with priority *important, but I believe the report was
dropped silently, and it was not accepted in the Ubuntu-launchpad either.
I proceeded to installing the testing-version of Hugin on Stretch-stable,
i.e. did a partial upgrade of Hugin and related packages only, and this
would not work well either, aligning the pictures and making larger panoramic
images from them, but at least I was able to stitch my panoramic images with
Hugin-testing on Debian-stable quite well, although it was not exactly ideal
to use Jessie-oldstable for aligning the pictures and making the pto-files
first.
D.Bremner explained to me, that packages from testing on Debian-stable are
generally unsupported and thus I would have to try out the current Testing
branch of the distribution in order to verify the problem, so now you have
the official report.
Quite astonishingly Hugin did well at first, the problem with testing the
panoramic-photo software is particularly, that it requires
hardware-accelerated GLX-graphics, so you cannot do the crucial first step of
making the pto-files on a remote-desktop, but you really have to connect a
physical monitor to the computer, also keyboard and mouse.
Next, seemingly my mistake was to announce publicly, that Hugin now works
fine for me on Debian Testing, and I am looking forward to the Buster
release, so I won't have to rely on Jessie-oldstable anymore, which will then
be in fact Jessie-old-oldstable and to physically switch monitors and
peripherals. But, big but, the next day there was a systemd-upgrade and
Hugin is now about as bad as it used to be for two years in finding the
control-points and making the pto-files.
I can only speculate about the motivation behind deliberately worsening the
software, it could be a personal issue, the guy just hates me, or the guy
who did it just hates Debian, and thinks, it ususally really should not be
used as a desktop-operating-system in his opinion, but people should rather
use Ubuntu on the desktop, since Canonical in fact pays him for his work
there.
So well OK, it might be motivating to produce some bullshit here, if it helps
generating higher income there, but personally I don't want to be subject to
your pathetic treats, when my essential application, that I use regularly,
does not work properly because of them.
So please be so kind to correct the issue, there are still about four weeks
left, until the Buster release is going to take place.
