If you lot are talking about the master/upstream/pristine-tar layout, it is a gbp (git-buildpackage) thing and is documented somewhere in its documentation.

(We're at the tor-dev meeting and a little busy.)

intrigeri pointed out that there's some good docs from one of the older teams on the Debian Wiki that should be migrated over and also linked somewhere obvious from this new team, we will go do that over the next few weeks. I think that also includes some docs about this git repository layout business.

For now "copy something else" is the way to go if you get confused.
