Title:
PCRE regex expressions with capture groups are not being handled
  properly

Status in proftpd-dfsg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
A bug was discovered, reported, and corrected in the source code maintained on github.
When PCRE regex is used to gather groups, it does not work correctly. If POSIX regex is used instead, it works as expected.

  See https://github.com/proftpd/proftpd/issues/1300 for full details.

The install package is "proftpd-core (1.3.7a+dfsg-12)" for the hirsute
  release of Ubuntu. https://packages.ubuntu.com/hirsute/proftpd-core

Note that this issue does not exist in the package created for the
  focal release of Ubuntu.

I hope I have provided all information needed for this and correctly
  :).
