No, GNOME does not depend on pulseaudio, at least not in Debian.
Introducing the dependency you suggest would make that a hard dependency
so this is not going to happen.

Until pulseaudio can be installed by default (probably not for squeeze),
I see two better alternatives:
      * The pulse module for libcanberra is directly integrated in
        libcanberra, and the pulseaudio dependency is removed (the
        libpulse dependency is not a problem).
      * The pulseaudio package recommends libcanberra-pulse.

Each of these solutions would be enough. I’ll let the maintainers (CCed)
decide which solution they prefer.
