There have been a couple of updates since this report was originally
submitted, but it appears that I am experiencing the same problem:

2011-12-19_08:28:07.23524 E: [pulseaudio] module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile.
2011-12-19_08:28:07.23554 E: [pulseaudio] module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="29" name="platform-thinkpad_acpi" card_name="alsa_card.platform-thinkpad_acpi" namereg_fail=false tsched=yes ignore_dB=no deferred_volume=yes card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed.
2011-12-19_08:28:07.27227 E: [pulseaudio] server-lookup.c: Unable to contact D-Bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11

This is preventing the pulseaudio daemon from launching.

Any idea what could be causing this, and how we could work around it?

jamie.
