I can confirm that replacing /usr/share/alsa/pulse-alsa.conf with

        description "Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server"
    }
}

ctl.!default {
    type pulse

}
------ /usr/share/alsa/pulse-alsa.conf ------

resolves the problem.

I am not sure the playback goes through pulse but it still shows as the default
device and playback works.
