I've just had a similar problem: audio suddenly stopped working
with both Iceweasel and VLC. I eventually saw with pavucontrol
in its Playback tab that switching
GK208 HDMI/DP Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)
to
Built-in Audio Analog Stereo
solved the problem for each concerned application.
