You probably thought you heard the last of me, but I did some more testing with Audacity.
When I switch the input device from default to my mic, there's no issue.
When I switch the input to Pulse, it crackles.
I now know with 97.33% certainty that it's Pulseaudio that's the problem. So please don't close this bug report yet, I could use your expertise.
