pulseaudio exits by default when there's nothing connected to it. However I have this line in ~/.pulse/default.pa load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-acl=127.0.0.1 auth-anonymous=1 So if the next program trying to use it is one of the programs trying to use it over TCP, it doesn't work.
