Sorry for not providing all this information at once when i open a bug, but i
don't think of some of these tests until later.

I've found that if the fileserver changes a file to a symlink, it updates on the
client, but when the symlink's pointer changes, the client just updates the
checksum of the mtime of the parent directory.
