I changed it again:
         def evaluate(scope)
	    file = File.open("/tmp/puppet_debug.txt","a")
             # evaluate the operands, should return a boolean value
             lval = @lval.safeevaluate(scope)
             rval = @rval.safeevaluate(scope)
	    file.puts rval.class
	    file.puts rval.is_a?(String)

yields:
String
false
