Bug#438603: Fails to build with python 2.5

This is now fixed, according to my tests it now works properly both with
python << 2.5 and with python >= 2.5. See the changelog entry for more
information about the implemented solution (which is actually less awful
than I initially expected).

Please give it a try and tell me how it goes.
